Starting in 2019, more and more MAGA intellectuals started talking about “Western Civilization.” In this presentation, Gorski identifies the key factions of the MAGA elite, explains why they took a civilizationist turn, and traces the emergence of a new trans-Atlantic right, linking religious, populist, and fascist movements in the U.S. and the EU.

Philip Gorski is the Frederick and Laura Goff Professor of Sociology and Religious Studies at Yale University. His research focuses on religion and politics in comparative and historical perspective with a focus on Western Europe and the United States. He is the author, most recently (w. Samuel Perry) of The Flag and the Cross: White Christian Nationalism and the Threat to American Democracy (Oxford, 2022).
