The Institute invites you to participate in 12 Weeks in Manresa: Spiritual Exercises for our Times, a virtual retreat in daily life based on the Spiritual Exercises, using a text offered through Jesuit Sources: “Finding Christ in the World: A Twelve Week Ignatian Retreat in Everyday Life,” by Joseph Tetlow, S.J., and Carol Atwell Ackels. The book is an extended adaptation for praying with the Exercises. It provides daily content for prayer and space for taking notes.
In addition to the book, which will guide your daily prayer, there are two additional components of the retreat: presentations on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, led by Fr. Casey Beaumier, S.J., and small group faith sharing.
The Institute’s involvement in your retreat is minimal. We distribute the text and assign you to a small group which will be facilitated by one or two of your fellow retreatants. The facilitators’ role is simply to schedule the timing of the small group meetings, ensure that everything is set in place to hold the virtual meetings, and then to start the weekly meetings on-time. There will be five presentations by the Institute throughout the 12 weeks.
The retreat will begin on June 7 and conclude on August 30. Those who are interested can register below. To ensure that you receive the book by June 7, please order the book as soon as possible, especially given the potential shipping delays related to COVID-19.
We will use “Finding Christ in the World: A Twelve Week Ignatian Retreat in Everyday Life” for the retreat. The book is an extended adaptation for praying with the Exercises. It provides daily content over the span of twelve weeks for prayer and space for taking notes. Each Week has its own spiritual topic which an introduction unpacks, and a page called Prayer Talk, which explores some experiences in prayer and gives a few suggestions as your prayer unfolds. You will want to have a special place and a definite time to pray each day. Find a place where you can expect to be undisturbed.
We suggest 30 minutes of daily prayer as a start. Over the weeks, you will find your own measure.
You have the choice to participate in small groups, assigned randomly by the Institute or organized on your own. The small groups randomly assigned by the Institute will be coordinated by facilitators.
We suggested that groups meet weekly, for about an hour each session.
We have asked retreatants who are interested in volunteering as facilitators to indicate so on their registration. These facilitators will be responsible for coordinating the small group faith sharing meetings, including:
- Scheduling the timing of the small group meetings
- Setup and hold the virtual small group meetings
- Address scheduling and technological issues with small group members
There will be five 1 hour sessions with presentations on the Spiritual Exercises by Fr. Casey Beaumier, S.J. for the entire retreat group. These will be held live via Zoom and will not be recorded. The dates of the Institute presentations on the Spiritual Exercises by Fr. Casey Beaumier, S.J. will be posted soon.
There is no charge for the retreat. The only cost is the purchase of the retreat material. You can purchase the material on the Jesuit Sources website. To ensure that you receive the book by June 7, please order the book as soon as possible, especially given the potential shipping delays related to COVID-19.
