On October 3, 2023, Markus Friedrich, delivered the seventh annual Feore Family Lecture on Jesuit Studies at Boston College. 

Markus Friedrich earned his Ph.D. from Munich University in 2002. After a stint at Duke University in 2003-2004, he became Assistant Professor at Goethe University, Frankfurt. From there, he joined the Jesuit Institute at Boston College in the academic year 2008-2009. In 2013, he became Associate Professor and then Full Professor at Hamburg University in 2020.He has worked extensively on the Jesuits, focusing on early modern Jesuit administration and bureaucracy, Jesuit communication, and hagiography. In 2022, Princeton University Press published the English translation of his comprehensive 2016 survey of Jesuit history. In addition, Markus has worked on the history of Christianity at large, including publications on Lutheranism and missions. He also studies modern knowledge regimes, resulting in monographs on the history of archives and genealogy.

The Institute presented Friedrich with the George E. Ganss, S.J., Award in Jesuit Studies to recognize his significant scholarly contributions to the field.
