In today’s connected world, your personal brand is just as important as your resume. A personal brand allows you to stand out from the crowd and tells people who you are, what makes you unique, and what skills and experiences you have to offer.
If you do not plan to use your social media account for professional networking, be sure to check your privacy settings and ensure that your account is as private and secure as possible. Keep in mind, however, that anything you post to social media could come up in a job search; be accountable and responsible.
Social media is an effective way to build your brand. Social media tools also give you real-time, immediate access to people outside your regular network.
To get started, think about where people from your industry are gathering online. Also, consider which social media tools allow you to best convey your personal brand. For instance, individuals who are interested in writing or research might start a blog to showcase their talents, while visual artists might post their work on tools such as Tumblr, Pinterest, or Instagram. A strong LinkedIn profile allows you to control what information potential employers, recruiters, and other networkers will see. Once you create an account, your profile will likely be one of the first results in a Google search of your name. Membership in a LinkedIn Group, such as the Boston College Career Community, gives you access to discussions within your field, helps to support your personal brand, and allows you to connect with people to whom you normally might not have access.
Twitter is a great way to connect with people who share your interests or career goals. For your professional Twitter account, use your real name, link it to your LinkedIn account, and follow people who follow you. Follow and interact with colleagues, friends, CEOs, and companies. To help establish yourself as an expert in your field, use your account to share your work and your thoughts about the industry, or even to pose questions to your followers.

Employers can and do make hiring decisions based on what they find on the Internet about you. Though the Career Center does not encourage students to use Facebook for professional networking purposes, you should be prepared in case an employer gains access to your profile. Pay attention to your privacy settings and be cautious about the content that you publish (and the content that is published about you).
