The Field Education Fact Sheet explains the requirements for supervision, hours, and schedule, as well as the support and services offered to supervisors for their efforts.
Placement Availability Form
The Placement Availability Form enables us to get a picture of your agency and its services. If your agency becomes affiliated with our school, this information will be posted on a database of agencies so that students can familiarize themselves with the opportunities available to them.
Field Supervisors
Field supervisors become mentors in this apprenticeship model of education. Field supervisors are primarily responsible for developing a field educational plan and providing ongoing supervision and consultation to the student. They are also charged with orienting the student to the profession of social work and to the context in which their agency provides services.
Responsibilities of the Field Supervisor include the following:
- Provide regularly scheduled, weekly supervision
- Work with the student to meet Field Education requirements, such as the learning contract, process recordings, etc.
- Provide an appropriate variety and number of assignments
- Complete a written evaluation at the end of each semester
- Consult with the BCSSW Field Advisor as needed, and meet with them at least once a semester to assess student performance
Supervisor Training and Support
Seminar in Field Instruction
Field Supervisors, especially new ones, are invited to participate in our Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI). The seminar is offered free of charge to supervisors with students in the current academic year and provides 16 CEUs after successful completion. It meets eight times over the course of the academic year: five in the fall semester and three in the spring semester. The seminar combines a didactic presentation with group discussion. Supporting materials are made available online through Boston College's Canvas learning system.
To register for SIFI, complete the registration form and email it to swfield@bc.edu or complete this Google form. Class size is limited to 20 per class.
Member schools of the New England Consortium of Graduate Field Education Directors (NECON) offer SIFI and other workshops throughout the year. If you are unable to attend SIFI at Boston College, you may take one offered at another New England school of social work. Contact each school directly to register.
Other Workshops
Boston College Continuing Education, in collaboration with the School of Social Work, offers continuing education workshops and courses throughout the year. Invitations to register for the workshops are sent to agency contacts, and some are offered free of charge in appreciation for the training of BCSSW students.
Field Supervisors Appreciation
The Field Education office annually invites supervisors and their interns to the Mary Mason Appreciation Breakfast. Named in honor of Mary A. Mason, BC Social Work's longest-serving Director of Field Education, the event is an opportunity to thank supervisors for their significant contribution to students' professional development and education.
