Digital Accessibility Consultations
Ensuring Inclusive Online Learning
Digital accessibility consultations provide instructors with practical support for creating more accessible digital course materials and online learning experiences. This service is available for online or hybrid courses that have previously been developed or supported by the Center for Digital Innovation in Learning (CDIL). Whether you are building a new Canvas course, revising existing materials, or addressing specific accessibility concerns, our team can help identify barriers and recommend clear, manageable improvements.
This service focuses on strengthening accessibility across Canvas and related online course materials, with attention to clear structure, readable formatting, alternative text, and effective navigation. The goal is to help online instructors make meaningful improvements that support all learners.
Consultation Support
Consultations are collaborative conversations tailored to the accessibility of your supported online course materials. We work with you to identify accessibility barriers, provide recommendations aligned with digital accessibility effective practices, and demonstrate strategies for implementing improvements. Our goal in these consultations is to guide faculty through accessibility tools and techniques, while faculty are responsible for implementing accessibility improvements within their course.
Support may include:
- Reviewing Canvas course organization and structure
- Improving readability and page formatting
- One-on-one training and support for using UDOIT and other accessibility checkers
- Adding or refining alternative text for images
- Strengthening accessibility in documents, slides, and media
Rather than approaching accessibility as a checklist, consultations are designed to build faculty knowledge, confidence, and sustainable accessibility practices that improve access to course content and learning materials for all students.
Request a Consultation
Faculty teaching online or hybrid courses previously developed or supported by CDIL who are interested in improving the accessibility of their digital course materials are encouraged to request a consultation by emailing us at cdil-inbox@bc.edu.
Resources and Guidance
Consultations are informed by a range of Boston College resources that support accessible course design and digital content. These include guidance for building accessible Canvas courses, creating accessible documents and presentations, and developing inclusive digital media. Instructors are also connected with broader campus support, including accessibility services, institutional policies, and technology guidance.
These materials are part of a shared set of resources used across course development and accessibility support efforts at the Center.
