BCSSW Alumni

There are many ways to continue to stay connected to the Boston College School of Social Work after graduation. Sharing your expertise through field placement opportunities, offering your guidance for mock interviewing, or committing your whole self to the mentoring program are just some of the great ways for alumni to stay involved.

Alumni Resources

Alumni Mentoring Program

The BCSSW Alumni Board invites alumni to sign up by August 1, 2024 for the Alumni Mentoring Program, which runs from September 2024 to June 2025. The program offers a great opportunity for recent graduates to learn from those with more experience, and experienced graduates to share their valuable perspectives and stay connected to the University.

Who Should Participate

Mentors: Alumni who have graduated in 2019 or before

Mentees: Alumni who have graduated in the years 2020 to 2024

What’s Expected from Mentors

We suggest a minimum of quarterly phone, teleconference, or e-mail communications between mentor and mentee, and find that many pairs communicate informally through texts and e-mails in-between scheduled communications as needed.

In addition, the BCSSW Mentoring Program coordinators provide quarterly articles on timely topics such as mentoring relationship goals, leadership and teamwork, work-life balance, workplace challenges, and career goals. While we supply a suggested agenda for the calls, there is flexibility to use the time however the mentee/mentor decide. We are also available as a resource for mentors as questions arise.

Volunteer as Mock Interviewer

Mock Interviews take place each spring virtually so soon-to-be graduates can practice their interviewing skills. Help prepare the next generation of social workers by volunteering to conduct a virtual mock interview. This academic year they will be offered March 22-24, 2023.

Each year the BCSSW Alumni Board solicits nominations for the annual Distinguished Alumni Awards. These awards recognize the significant contributions to the field of social work made by a BCSSW alumni. Two awards are given each year, one to a recent graduate (5-10 years) and the other to an alumnus or alumna 10+ years from graduation.

Criteria for this award can include:

  • Significant contributions that enhance the profession of social work in the larger community.
  • Significant contributions made to social work education.
  • Significant contributions made in the area of public service.
  • Significant contributions to practice issues within the profession.
  • Significant contributions to social policy and change.
  • Significant contributions to the BCSSW students and alumni.
  • A lifetime achievement in the profession of social work.

Nominees must be alumni of the Boston College School of Social Work (MSW or PhD). Current BCSSW Alumni Association Board members and BCSSW employees are not eligible. Both the award winner and the person who nominates the award winner will be invited to attend the annual award ceremony.
