As of March 2021, Google added a new security feature to BC Google Meet settings, called Quick Access. While Quick Access is turned ON you will not notice any differences in how Google Meet behaves. However, if a meeting organizer turns Quick Access OFF, these new security features are added to the meeting:

  • The host must join first, and if you join a meeting before the host, you’ll be brought to a waiting room.
  • Only people invited by the host can join the meeting without asking.
  • Everyone else must ask the host to join the meeting (even if they were invited by someone else in the meeting).
  • People cannot join anonymously.
  • Only hosts can dial out of a meeting.

Meeting organizers can choose to turn Quick Access on or off at any time once a Google Meet has been created, either before a meeting has started, or even during a meeting.

Recurring Meeting Tip: DO NOT SELECT “End meeting for all,” or “End the call.” Instead, select “Leave meeting.” Selecting “End meeting for all” or “End the call” will automatically turn OFF Quick Access for all future instances of the recurring meeting, and all the new security features will be applied to future instances of the meeting.

Verify your recurring meetings have Quick Access On
You may have accidentally turned Quick Access OFF for a recurring meeting. Take the following steps to ensure it is ON:

  1. Click a meeting in your Google Calendar and then click the Edit event icon
  2. Under event details, click Change conference settings icon
  3. Check the box next to "Quick access" and then click Save

NOTE: You must be the meeting organizer to update these settings.
