Good luck on your next endeavor. We hope you find this information helpful as you depart Boston College.
Students Graduating in May
- Library privileges for borrowing materials ends on Graduation Day; thereafter, graduates can sign up for an Alumni Library Card to check out items.
- Email, BC Google account, Agora Portal, network access, and all other BC services will be available until October 1st of that same year. After October 1st, your BC Google account (including your BC email) will be deleted and all other BC services will no longer be accessible. If you would like to keep your BC email address after graduation, you can set up your alumni forward-only email address (this is an email forwarding service only, not an email account). Note: You will receive an email reminder one month before you lose access.
- Your Eagle ID card will be deactivated the day after commencement.
Uninstall software you acquired through BC
Some of the software you installed on your computer was installed under student licensing agreements, administered by the University. Since you are no longer a student, you should now remove Microsoft Office (Mac & Windows), McAfee ePO & VirusScan Enterprise (Windows only) software from your computer in accordance with the respective manufacturer’s terms and conditions.
Get antivirus protection
If you uninstalled the BC McAfee antivirus software, be sure to get your own antivirus software immediately. Your computer should not be left unprotected from viruses for any length of time.
BC recommends installing the free version of Sophos Home (Mac & Windows).
With email forwarding, you can have a BC email address that remains constant after you leave BC. This email address is not an email account, but BC will forward email sent to your "@bc.edu" addresses (username@bc.edu & firstname.lastname.#@bc.edu) to your non-BC email account. As long as you update BC with your current non-BC email address, you will continue to receive email through your Boston College forward-only email address.
Please remember that access to your saved email, email folders, BC Google account (g.bc.edu), and many student services in Agora Portal will not be available after the deactivation process.
Setting up Email Forwarding
We highly recommend you set up email forwarding before your email account is deactivated. By default, BC will forward email sent to both of your "@bc.edu" addresses (username@bc.edu & firstname.lastname.#@bc.edu).
To set up email forwarding:
- Sign in to Agora Portal using your BC username and password. If you don't have a BC Alumni account in Agora Portal, register using the Alumni Online Registration system. Once registered, go to Step 2.
- Under “Account and Personal Info,” click "Email Services."
- Follow the instructions on the web page.

Student Employees
You can transfer file ownership of any Google Drive content you created in the context of your employment.
Faculty & Staff
- Your status becomes inactive, which occurs on the date established for your termination in the Human Resources Information system.
- Email, BC Google account, Agora Portal, network access, and all other BC services for faculty and staff expire thereafter on a schedule established by ITS (Information Technology Services). The schedule is subject to change but presently is run seven times a year. In most cases an employee/faculty member will receive a notice informing them that their email account is about to expire. Some departments have established a business practice of requesting that access and email accounts expire when the employee/faculty member leaves the University.
- You must uninstall Sophos, Microsoft Office, and Acrobat Pro, if any of these titles were downloaded from Boston College onto your personal computer.
- Do others need access to your Google files? Transfer file ownership of any Google Drive content you created.
- Do others need access to your Windows files? Transfer ownership of any Windows shares. Talk to your TC about how to do this.
- Set an auto reply on your BC Gmail account to let people know your last day and where to direct inquiries to.
- If appropriate, forward your BC Gmail account to the staff member who will be taking over your duties.
- Return BC-owned devices (computers, mobile devices, flash drives, etc.) to your supervisor.
Are you also a BC graduate?
If you are also a BC graduate, you can setup a BC email address that remains constant after you leave BC. See "How to Set Up Email Forwarding" in the Student tabs on this page.
