Meghan Butler ’03, M.A. ’17, Higher Education, discussed the value of an advanced degree and the challenge of balancing work and a graduate program in the Boston Herald in May. Butler is director of Student and Alumni Class Programs for Boston College.
Chris Coleman, M. Ed. ’07, Elementary Education, received the Lincoln County (Maine) Teacher of the Year Award. Coleman is a fourth grade teacher at the Great Salt Bay Community School.
In April, BC Softball’s Senior Day was also named Back the Blue Day and the game was dedicated to Ronny Cortez—father of Tatiana Cortez ’17 and a 24-year veteran of the Houston Police Department, who was wounded in the line of duty in February. More than 100 police officers lined up on the field and the Boston College Police Department presented a $2,000 check to the Cortez family. Earlier this season, Tatiana, who majored in Applied Psychology and Human Development, set the BC Softball record for home runs. View NECN story.

Kevin Dua, M. Ed. ’12, Secondary Education, received the Don Salvucci Award for Excellence in Promoting Civic Education from the Massachusetts Council for the Social Studies. Dua is a history teacher at Somerville (Mass.) High School.
Boston College students, alumni, and friends ran in the 2017 Boston Marathon to raise funds for charitable causes. Sasha Greene, M.Ed. 2012, Curriculum & Instruction (Severe Special Needs), who is a teacher at the Campus School at Boston College, raised more than $10,000 for the school. Read BC News story.
Tiffany Cooper Gueye ’00, Ph.D. ’07, CEO of the nonprofit organization BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life), was awarded an honorary degree at Boston College’s Commencement in May. Gueye’s doctorate was in Educational Research, Measurement, and Evaluation.
Actress, recording artist, and teacher (Janelle) Lovely Hoffman ’03, M.Ed. ’04, Curriculum and Instruction, is putting her varied backgrounds to work boosting the self-esteem of young black women at Dorchester’s Helen Y. Davis Leadership Academy. Hoffman developed a self-worth curriculum that includes a music video for the song she created, “My Black Is Beautiful.” View video on WBUR-Radio’s Edify or read the Boston Globe story.
Cherry Lim, M.A. ’17, Higher Education, participated in the American College Personnel Association Case Study Competition. Her team won first place in the graduate student track.
Adrian Mims, Ed.D. ’10, Educational Leadership (PSAP), created the Calculus Project to lessen knowledge gaps that many African American and Latino students experience, which are exacerbated by being one of a few students of color in a classroom. Learn more on WBUR-Radio’s Edify.
Christina Pavlak, Ph.D. ’13, Curriculum & Instruction, received a Faculty Scholar Award from Quinnipiac University for her work on literacy education for English-language learners. Pavlak is an assistant professor of education at Quinnipiac.
Center for International Higher Education Research Fellow Liz Reisberg, Ph.D. ’08, has been the editor of “The World View,” a blog of Inside Higher Ed since its inception in June 2010. The fourth edition of CIHE Perspectives maps the evolution of “The World View” over the past seven years.
Doctoral student Maria Gabriela Távara Vásquez, Counseling, Developmental, and Educational Psychology, was awarded an International Doctoral Degree Fellowship from the American Association of University Women to support her dissertation research.
