A new book, Pursuing Language and Metalinguistics in K–12 Classrooms: A Framework for Critical Engagement by Professor C. Patrick Proctor and Lynch School alumna Renata Love Jones, Ph.D. ’20 (Curriculum and Instruction), provides a guide for K-12 educators to design curriculum focused on literacy and metalinguistics.
Metalinguistics, the ability to evaluate language as a process or system, reflecting on its rules, nature, and ability to connect people, is also a strong predictor of literacy achievement.
The framework presented in this book was developed by Patrick Proctor, a professor in the Teaching, Curriculum, and Society (TCS) Department, in collaboration with Jones. While providing a practical guide for implementing necessary literacy instruction, the book emphasizes the importance of honoring and valuing the linguistic diversity of students within the classroom.
Pursuing Language and Metalinguistics in K–12 Classrooms balances theories of language and research with practical, concrete examples in engaging and accessible ways.
“Our goal in writing this book was to develop a framework that K-12 educators, including teachers, coaches, and specialists, could apply to both guide their own literacy and content instruction, as well as to critically assess the different literacy curricula that educators often find themselves having to implement.”
Stemming from Jones' doctoral dissertation—which she worked on in collaboration with Proctor and other TCS faculty—the book is a true reflection of Lynch School collaboration.
"Kristen Bottema-Beutel discussed critical metalinguistic engagement in educating autistic students,” Proctor shared, going on to name other Lynch School community members who contributed to the book. “Lillie Albert and Kyunghoon Son, Ph.D. ’25 (Curriculum and Instruction) explored language in mathematics instruction, while Kate McNeill and Sam Lee, Ph.D. ’24 (Curriculum and Instruction) focused on facilitating equitable sensemaking in science classrooms for multilingual students through language and multimodality."
