Associate Professor Raquel Muñiz’s newest publication, Disrupt the “Not-Telling”: Gatekeeping Issues on the way to Tenure and Promotion for Black Women at HBCUs, MSIs, and PWIs, offers an examination of the systemic biases that discourage qualified women from positions in educational leadership. In partnership with Leah P. Hollis and Tara B. Blackshear, the
co-authors highlight the experiences of highly educated Black women.

Did you know?

67% of doctorates earned by Black scholars are awarded to women.

Despite this remarkable achievement, Black women remain significantly underrepresented in tenured faculty and senior leadership positions within academia.

Muñiz, Blackshear, and Hollis explore this disparity through a combination of personal testimonies from accomplished Black women and empirical research, offering a broader analysis of how racism and sexism intersect, even among highly educated professionals. The discussion is especially impactful in its examination of various institutional settings, such as predominantly white institutions, minority-serving institutions, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities, amongst which Black support varies considerably.

Together, they call upon institutions to critically examine their commitments to equity and inclusion, proposing several frameworks through which academia can better recognize, support, and elevate the achievements of Black women.

A common thread throughout this work is the importance of educating with love and persistence:

“We are all here for love, to share a love through our skills, through our knowledge.”

Guided by empathy, this book provides valuable insights to stimulate meaningful conversations about Black women’s roles within academic institutions. Moving beyond merely highlighting challenges, it presents research-backed approaches and practical recommendations to help colleges and universities navigate a more equitable path to tenure.
