Patrick Conway

Boston College Lynch School of Education and Human Development doctoral student, Patrick Conway, was selected as the winner of the 2021 Have You Heard Graduate Student Research Contest. His research raises essential and relevant questions about who is entitled to be educated at tax-payer expense, what kind of education they should receive, and how we view crime. He has extensive experience teaching incarcerated students, most recently through the Boston College Prison Education Program (BCPEP).

“If you know anything about higher education in prison, it's that these programs "pay off" for taxpayers in the form of tax savings and lower rates of recidivism. But the economic justification for college behind bars misses a far more profound value,” said Conway.

Have You Heard episode #117, College Behind Bars: The Case for Higher Education in Prison centers around Conway’s research and the discussion of tax-payer funded education in prison. The episode features Conway and a former student of the Boston College Prison Education Program (BCPEP).
