The Computer Science (CS) Department offers a small, highly selective Ph.D. program for students specializing in one of two broad research areas: Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning and the Theory of Computation. The Ph.D. program trains students at the research frontier, enabling them to contribute to human knowledge while serving the common good.

Ph.D. Program Overview

The Ph.D. program is driven by research. Research exams and the dissertation play central roles. Completion of at least 60 academic credits is required: 30 or more research credits, including 24 dissertation credits and 6 credits in Advanced Independent Study; and 30 credits of other coursework with a grade of B or higher beyond a CS undergraduate degree.
