Profile

I have taught widely at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and am currently teaching postgraduate courses in the history of sport and undergraduate courses in Irish history. To date I have supervised 8 students to the completion of their PhD, and am currently supervising a further 6 students.

As an historical commentator I have appeared widely in the print media, online, on radio and television with my credits ranging from a role as historical advisor on the 2016 RTE/PBS production, 1916, which was aired in 40 countries and watched by over 3 million people, to BBC Radio 4’s Sport and the British, and most recently the US version of Who Do You Think You Are?

In recent years I have been directing the major online project for the Irish government’s Decade of Centenaries (20132023). The projecwww.rte.ie/centuryireland has been visited over 2.7 million times since it began in 2013, and is one of the largest realtime and online historical projects ever undertaken. This has been accompanied by the award winning companion sites on the Easter Rising 1916, http://www.rte.ie/centuryireland/index.php/easterrising/ and the Irish in Gallipolhttps://gallipoli.rte.ie/
