Elizabeth H. Prodromou is Professor of the Practice in the International Studies Program.  She is also a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center. A member of the Global Academic Council of the International Religious Freedom Secretariat, she served as Vice Chair and member of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (2004-2012) and as a member of the U.S. Secretary of State’s Religion & Foreign Policy Working Group (2011-2015). She is a member of the Global Academic Council of the International Religious Freedom Secretariat.

A political scientist whose academic research concentrates on the intersection of geopolitics, religion, and human rights, Prodromou focuses regionally on the Eastern Mediterranean and Near East. An expert on global Orthodox Christianity, She is co-editor of two volumes, Eastern Orthodox Christianity and American Higher Education: Theological, Historical, and Contemporary Reflections, and Thinking through Faith: Perspectives from Orthodox Christian Scholars. Her forthcoming publications include Dissent, Power, and Christian Identity After Nicaea (co-edited with Jason Welle) and a special edition of the Journal of Orthodox Christian Studies, on “Rethinking War and Human Rights: Orthodox Thought and Practice” (co-edited with Effie Fokas). Published in academic and policy journals such as Orbis, Survival, Journal of World Christianity, Review of Faith and International Affairs, Journal of Democracy, Journal of the American Academy of Religion, her recent publications on state use of religion for geopolitical influence-building include “Diplomacy, Geopolitics, and Global Orthodoxy in the Twenty-First Century” (2023) and “Influence Operations in Greece’s Religious Ecosystem” (2022).

In addition to co-chairing the International Relations section of the International Orthodox Theological Association, she co-chaired the multi-year working group on Christians and Religious Pluralism in the Middle East, at the Center for American Progress and the Hudson Institute.  She was a delegate consultant of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, one of four women participants, at the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church in 2016.

She is a frequent commentator in US and international media and has offered expert testimony and briefings to international organizations. Her policy-practitioner work extends to board memberships on Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP), Religions for Peace, the Global Religion Journalism Initiative, Freedom of Religion or Belief Women’s Alliance, and the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Task Force on Modern Slavery. Prodromou worked in international banking, and has taught at Tufts University, Boston University, and Princeton University. She holds a Ph.D. and an S.M in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a MALD from The Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, and a BA from Tufts University.
