LaMattina Family Grant for Social Justice Film

The LaMattina Family Grant for Social Justice Film is a student documentary funding program established by the family of Boston College alumnus Dave LaMattina. The grant supports student documentary film projects that explore social justice topics in the United States or internationally.

Dave LaMattina is an award-winning filmmaker, director, producer, and writer whose work spans documentary film and television. He graduated from Boston College in 2003 with a degree in Communication. As an undergraduate, he received a grant from the Jacques Salmanowitz Program for Moral Courage in Documentary and Film to produce a documentary about Nkosi Johnson, a young South African AIDS activist. He later earned an MFA from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. LaMattina is the co-founder of Copper Pot Pictures and has directed and produced numerous documentary and television projects focused on compelling real-life stories and the people behind them.

Grant Details

Maximum funding: $5,000 in total. The funds may be awarded to a single recipient or divided among multiple recipients.Application deadline: 5:00 p.m. on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Application Requirements

To apply, submit a document containing the following information to Professor Zuko Garagic:

  1. Name, graduation year, and major(s)/minor(s)
  2. Project title: The title of your proposed documentary film.
  3. Project description: A 250–500-word description of the project, including its social justice focus.
  4. Proposed travel dates: The anticipated dates of travel, if applicable.
  5. Proposed budget: An itemized estimate of anticipated project expenses (please see the attached budget template).
  6. Equipment needs: A description of the equipment needed to complete the project.
