Awards & Honors
Every spring, the Art, Art History, and Film Department recognizes the achievements of outstanding senior majors through a variety of competitive awards.
Richard and Marianne W. Martin Memorial Award is awarded to an Art History major of high academic and creative achievement. Established by the Boston College Friends of Art, this award is given annually in memory of Marianne W. Martin, Professor of Art History at Boston College from 1976-1989, and her husband Richard.
Allison R. Macomber, Jr. Award was established and supported by gifts from the Horbach Fund for outstanding work in the Fine Arts in honor of Allison R. Macomber, Jr., Artist-in-Residence at Boston College. It is awarded to exceptional majors in Art History and Studio Art.
The Jeffery Howe Art History Award was established by the Boston College Arts Council in 2011 to honor Professor Howe’s outstanding service to the Arts at BC. It recognizes a Boston College senior who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship in the area of art or architectural history.
The Mary A. Armstrong Award in Art is given to a student who has developed an artistic practice of outstanding quality and who presents the highest level of commitment and personal involvement with his/her work. Mary A. Armstrong (1948-2020) taught painting and drawing at Boston College for thirty years. A devoted and inspiring mentor, an artist of the highest caliber, and a warm, wonderful human being, Mary helped set students on their paths through life and gave them the courage to pursue their passion for the visual arts.
The J. Robert Barth, S.J., Award for Excellence in the Arts is granted in honor of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (1988-1999), who established and nurtured departments and programs in the arts, this award is presented annually to a senior who has made outstanding contributions to BC in the visual or performing arts.
The John Michalczyk Award in Social Justice Films honors the legacy of John Michalczyk, a longtime professor, filmmaker, and director of Film Studies. Known for his work in documentary film, social justice, human rights, and Holocaust studies, Professor Michalczyk inspired generations of students in his 52 years at Boston College. This award recognizes a student whose work demonstrates moral engagement in the area of social justice films and was made possible through a generous donation of Angelos Bougas (class of 2021).
The Film Production Award is granted in recognition of excellence in an area related to film production (including screenwriting, directing, and cinematography) in the Film Studies program.
The Film Studies Award is granted in recognition of excellence in coursework related to the history or philosophy of Film in the Film Studies program.
