Why study English?

English is one of the largest departments in the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences, and a cornerstone of Boston College’s thriving commitment to the liberal arts. We offer numerous courses on a wide range of subjects, including literary and cultural history, genre, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, migration, disability, the environment, digital humanities, and creative writing. We have a large presence in the core, especially in the teaching of the First-Year Writing Seminar and the Literature Core. We also have a large major and minor, a two-year MA program, and a selective PhD program, while remaining active in numerous interdisciplinary programs and speaker series.
