The Earth’s ionosphere can have profound, often detrimental, effects on the radio
waves that pass through it, such as causing errors in GPS and communications
signals, and is a major focus of the research at BC’s ISR. Several ISR scientists recently traveled to Krakow, Poland to present their ionospheric research at the XXXVIth URSI General Assembly and Scientific Symposium, URSI GASS 2026. URSI GASS is the flagship scientific event for the International Radio Science Union (URSI), held triennially. Keith Groves gave a talk on GPS errors caused by the 2024 Gannon storm, Dima Paznukhov discussed E region irregularities, and Rezy Pradipta presented work on day-to-day variability of spread-F. Ted Beach gave a talk on mid-latitude VHF-band scintillation observed from BC since 2022, and Matt Proctor presented work on using computer vision to forecast scintillation. Groves and Paznukhov also chaired sessions on general radio science and HF propagation, respectively. As Chair of URSI Commission G, Groves served on the award committees for Student Papers and for Young Scientists and led the business meetings for the commission to address URSI business and plan future flagship assemblies.
