2022 Teaching Assistant & Teaching Fellow Orientation

Previously called the Graduate Student Teaching Conference, the TA/TF Orientation is held annually before the start of the fall semester and helps prepare new Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows to teach at BC. It provides the opportunity to learn about some of the particularities of teaching BC students and connect with and learn from other graduate students. This year’s event was held in person on Friday, August 26, 2022 and included a faculty plenary, graduate student panels, and workshops. 

Friday, August 26, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00/3:30 pm | Higgins Hall

9:00 - 10:15 am: Plenary: Engaging and Supporting BC Students (Higgins 300)

10:30 - 11:30 am: Concurrent Session #1

11:30 am - 12:00 pm: Pick up box lunches (Outside Higgins 300)

12:00 - 1:00 pm: Concurrent Session #2

1:10 pm: Concurrent Session #3

2:20 - 3:30 pm: Preparing for the First Semester as a Teaching Assistant (for TAs in Natural Sciences)

Audience

The in-person sessions are open to any graduate student serving as a Teaching Assistant or Teaching Fellow for the first time at Boston College. The livestream of the plenary is open to new and returning graduate student instructors.

  • Real-time captioning of the plenary session

  • A quiet room that is reserved throughout the day

Covid Precautions

Here are the COVID protocols you can expect to experience at orientation: 

  • Masks: We will be following BC's masking policies (you can find up-to-date guidance on the BC Forward webpage); we will have masks available at the check-in desk.
  • Remote participation: You can attend the opening plenary in person or via livestream. (Other sessions will only be available in person.) On the registration form, you will be able to indicate how you plan to participate.
  • Lunch: During the 30-minute lunch break, you can choose to eat in Higgins or outside.
