Study Abroad

We encourage art history majors and minors to study abroad in the belief that it provides students with a unique opportunity to experience other cultures and traditions first-hand. We recommend that students select a location with museums, historic architecture, and programming that will enhance their understanding of works of art in their original context.

We prefer that majors take a maximum of two courses and minors a maximum of one course abroad. Students may be allowed to take additional courses with the preapproval of the department. Most often, courses taken abroad are used as major electives. We suggest that students study abroad prior to their senior year, since the Senior Art History Seminar is crucial to the completion of the major. There are no restrictions on the term that a student may study abroad.

Art History courses taken abroad are not accepted for the Arts Core except in the case of a few pre-approved courses taught as part of BC study abroad programs, which can be found in the Pre-Approved Courses List.

Please contact the Director of Undergraduate Study for Art History, Prof. Aurelia Campbell, for study abroad course approval.

Study Abroad

Art history faculty work closely with students to help them select a study abroad program that closely aligns with their chosen area of concentration--whether it’s in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, or elsewhere.
