The team at the Connell School of Nursing now includes faculty who study topics that include the relationship between hospital work and diabetes outcomes, perinatal care models, and managing patient agitation.

What motivates your research?

“A significant proportion of people with diabetes are of working age, but the links between work and diabetes outcomes have been underexplored. In particular, data characterizing the relationships between work-related factors and diabetes outcomes for the millions of people employed by hospitals is quite scarce.

“I study those relationships as they relate to hospital nursing personnel—the largest workforce in U.S. hospitals. Findings from my research provide information that is relevant to workers and patients, and reveal new opportunities to improve these special populations’ health and well-being.”

ERIN GEORGE
Assistant Professor

What motivates your research?

“My research is rooted in my clinical career of more than a decade in the Boston area, where I have provided full-scope midwifery care in academic medical centers, community hospitals, and freestanding birth centers. .

“We know perinatal outcomes and experiences differ widely across birth settings, but people don’t always realize that such variations may affect their experiences during pregnancy and birth as well as postpartum. I am developing better ways to collect, analyze, and disseminate data to help us understand how to best support people as they decide where to seek care; improve access to and information about excellent perinatal models of care; and strengthen our ability to study the most pressing issues affecting perinatal health in the United States.”

HEIDI HOLIVER
Assistant Professor of the Practice

What motivates your research?

“I recently spent time as a volunteer and am now a consultant for Partners In Health’s global mental health division. In this work, I have helped inform and guide trainings on de-escalation techniques and patient agitation management in diverse settings. I always feel invigorated by the passion these staff have for safe patient care, regardless of the resource limitations they may experience.

“CSON’s emphasis on service means that I am able to continue these efforts. I hope that by sharing this work with my CSON students, I can give them unique perspectives on working in various health care systems.”
