A message from the Dean

Dear alumni and friends,

A decade ago, on June 1, 2008, Boston College founded the School of Theology and Ministry, its newest professional school in more than half a century. As we mark this anniversary, we enjoy reflecting on STM’s short- and long-term success. The School’s significant accomplishments in its first 10 years include nearly doubling its enrollment; increasing the academic and ministerial strengths of the student body; hiring more than a dozen new faculty to advance the next generation of scholarship; and sustaining close to a 100 percent graduate placement rate. The expansive growth of STM Continuing Education makes it possible for us to offer ongoing formation to thousands of people around the globe.

Long term, the School’s impact extends far beyond Simboli Hall. In less than a decade, STM has become an integral part of the Boston College community, engaging in interdisciplinary teaching and research, establishing partnerships with centers, institutes, and offices, and providing service and leadership in programs across campus. The outside world also recognizes the value of our integrated approach to theology and ministry. Boston College ranked sixth among the world’s top universities, and first among Catholic institutions, in theology, divinity, and religious studies in the 2018 QS World University Rankings. While these rankings are gratifying to see, our primary concern remains to grow more in embodying the way of excellence set forth by Christ in the Gospels.

We have planned a number of events and lectures to commemorate STM’s first 10 years, including a September 20th anniversary Mass and lecture to be given by James Martin, S.J. I hope to see you on campus this year to celebrate.

Finally, as we recognize this milestone, I want to take this opportunity to thank you, our alumni and friends, for all that you have done to make the STM what it is today. You are part of a community dedicated to service, ministry, and leadership in diverse academic, ecclesial, and faith-based contexts worldwide. Your work will ensure the success of STM and the Church for many years to come.

Sincerely,

Thomas D. Stegman, S.J.
Dean
