Cal Halvorsen quoted in MSN Money Talks

Cal Halvorsen, an assistant professor, has found that wealthier older adults are more likely to volunteer, but lower-wealth volunteers may gain even greater health benefits from the experience.

His findings were featured in MSN Money Talks, which quoted a press release where Halvorsen said: “It is noteworthy that formal volunteering may operate as a health equalizer. Policymakers and charitable organizations tend to focus on the middle class to wealthy volunteers, but it’s important to eliminate barriers to volunteering among the least wealthy, such as lack of transportation, discrimination, or lack of organizational support.”
