BCYF Mildred Avenue Community Center

Nature and Purpose

Boston residents advocated for using school buildings after hours as community centers in the 1970s. This idea turned into Boston Community Schools in 1972. We’ve grown over the years, and became Boston Centers for Youth & Families in 2001. Today, we are the City of Boston’s largest youth and human services agency. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for Boston residents by partnering with community center councils, agencies and businesses to support neighborhood needs. Our affordable programs range from preschool, school-aged and adult education, family literacy, and youth employment to violence prevention and intervention, senior activities, recreation and enrichment.

The BCYF Mildred Avenue Community Center features an auditorium/ theater, community room, computer lab, dance/ aerobic studio, gymnasium, music studio, indoor pool, senior center, and teen center. The center is also home to a licensed after-school program that coordinates with the Mildred School to ensure students have sufficient after-school academic support.

PULSE students will tutor and mentor in the after-school and youth programs, assist the computer instuctor in the computer lab, assist in the aquatics porgrams, support the general operations of the center, and collaborate with staff. Students have the option to create and implement new activities according to their interests and the center's needs.
