This course is designed to address the issues involved and the roles of key individuals involved in the operations and management of a performing arts production from the moment the idea for the production is conceived until the final performance. The roles and functions of everyone involved in the creative process will be explored and defined.

THTR 2252 Marketing the Arts (Spring: 3 credits)

The course will have a major focus on the practical application of the art and science of marketing the arts, especially theatre, in today’s increasingly competitive economic environment. Specifically, the course will investigate the evolution modern marketing, market principles and terms, marketing approaches and management and strategic marketing plans. The course will also investigate fund raising, financial management and economics and the arts. Practical experience will include workshops in program and poster layout and design, advertising campaigns for arts events and surveys of the effectiveness of arts marketing at Boston College. Special emphasis will be placed on the application of theory to actual arts marketing situations.

THTR 2251 Principles of Theater Management

This course is designed to address the issues involved in the operations and management of a performing arts center. Areas to be covered in the course are: basic management theory as it relates to arts management, strategic planning and decision making, fundamentals of organizational design, fundamentals of leadership and group dynamics, budgeting and economics in the arts, and financial management. The course will use case studies to test theories and ideas developed by the class.
