Since 1980 I have taught in the PULSE Program where I have seen, first-hand, the importance of "being proximate" to those we serve in our community partnerships. I strive to help students make meaningful and lasting connections between the Jesuit ideals of "men and women for others" and those we serve in our community placements. In addition, having spent my career as the president of two non-profit organizations, I invite my students to see their careers as ministry - For example, can students who study law become ministers of justice, those who study health care become ministers of healing, or those who study business become ministers of resources. I believe in experiential education. For example, in my urban analysis class, I use the city as my classroom. In addition to teaching at Boston College I also serve on 6 non-profit boards including Pine Street Inn, Haley House and Cathedral High School. I invite students to engage with the city of Boston, not as tourists, but as thoughtful analytical thinkers and problem solvers.
