2026 Archbishop Oscar Romero Scholarship Recipient
1. What motivated you to apply for the Romero Scholarship?
I was motivated to apply for this scholarship opportunity because I admire several of the previous winners and applicants. Also, I heard about this scholarship early on in my BC career and knew I wanted to apply when the time was right for others to recognize what I do for the Latino community and to prove to myself that the work that I do doesn’t go unnoticed. Furthermore, encouragement from friends and faculty reinforced my desire to apply for this scholarship.
2. What was the most memorable question from the interview, and how did you respond?
The most memorable question was when I was asked to describe my mentor, Denise, in one word in French, because I did not expect the question, and especially not in a different language. I responded maman, which translates to mom. I heard and felt myself getting emotional as I responded, but Denise has truly been a pillar throughout my journey at BC and someone that I know I can count on for advice in every area of my life, whether it's academics or just the day-to-day stress that I encounter.
3. How did you feel when you heard your name called as the award winner?
I was overwhelmed with joy, but I think that part of me was still in shock and disbelief. It took me a while to process that it was real because it all happened so fast, and as much as I wanted it, and I knew I had my family and friends’ support, it felt surreal as I walked up to receive the award.
4. What do you feel is your biggest responsibility as the Romero Scholarship recipient?
My biggest responsibility is to continue setting an example for other students on campus and living out my commitments to the Latino community. I truly want to be a welcoming face that others, especially underclassmen, can see and feel a connection to. I want to be approachable so that they can feel comfortable asking me questions about my own BC experience or any other aspect of myself that I’ve shared that aligns with them or their future goals.
5. What would you say to students who are thinking of applying next year?
I would encourage all students to do it! The process in and of itself is very rewarding if you take the time to be reflective about your commitments and to be your most genuine and authentic self,
because in this way, the narrative will flow easily and all the pieces of things that you do and your “why” will easily come together.
