Fall 2023

This issue of Arts and Sciences illustrates the ways in which our long-standing commitment to excellence in the liberal arts provides the foundation for innovative research and teaching across the whole range of disciplines that give life to the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences. Recent investments in human-centered engineering and STEM research are well aligned with our renewed insistence that the distinctiveness of Jesuit education be grounded in the formative power of the humanities and the liberal arts. I know you will enjoy our featured video, highlighting the integration of interdisciplinary research with insights grounded in the liberal arts and a powerful commitment to social impact and the common good. That same integration is evident in the Schiller Institute’s interdisciplinary grant program, the groundbreaking research conducted by Professors Sönmez and Ünver, and the wide-ranging expertise represented by the new Morrissey College faculty featured in this issue. As we build new programs, our guiding philosophy remains unchanged: outstanding research that addresses complex social problems and serves the common good while drawing life from our foundational commitment to the humanities as an essential component of a formative liberal arts education in the Jesuit tradition.

Gratitude is central to the tradition of Jesuit spirituality that animates Boston College. As we move toward the upcoming celebration of Thanksgiving, there is no doubt that we have much for which to give thanks. I remain deeply grateful for all the gifts that our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and benefactors bring to the life and mission of the Morrissey College every day. Be assured of my continued prayers for good health for you, your families, and our Boston College community. Best wishes to all for a Happy Thanksgiving.
