Bemnet in Ghana

Studying abroad in Ghana has allowed me to grow as person in a manner that would have never been possible had I stayed in my comfort zone at BC. Being out of my comfort zone allowed me to look inwards and explore what my fundamental building blocks. One of my favorite quotes is by Robert Frost, “Two roads diverged in a wood and I took the one less traveled by and that has made all the difference.” This in part was a major factor in my decision to study abroad in Ghana and work for Sangu Delle covering Tech and Healthcare Investing while aboard. This is an experience that has helped shape my future goals and ambitions of creating a world where everyone gets equal opportunities.

My favorite experience of studying abroad was having the opportunity to work at Golden Palm Investments Corporation (GPIC) building Africa’s future. A massive population growth, vibrant and growing middle class and a booming technology revolution will create trillions of economic and social values in Africa over the next several decades. Our mission is to back the best innovators and entrepreneurs to build a world class business that will transform the African continent. These goals have resonated with me and I was able to help close my first invest in an African startup in Kenya.

Studying abroad in Ghana has also forced me to confront the privilege that I possess as an American and the position I find myself in to help others. Aligning with the Jesuit teaching I have been forced to confront the question of, “How can I be a man for others?” To address this question I believe the answer stems from empowering people to build their own future.

In the classroom I was able to take courses that explored politics and history from a Pan-African perspective. Previously my exposure to politics and history was only through a Western lense which focused on putting Western ideologies on a pedestal. The courses in Ghana helped me understand the short-comings of the Western system that governs the world. I believe this understanding has allowed me to better understand the global perspective that exists of the United States and led me to reflect on the country I call home.
