Sam Fields: Workshop and Public Talk - "Textiles, Embodiment, and Empathy"

Sam Fields

Event #1:

11:00- 1:00 Workshop:

Collective Making as Accompaniment, Thompsen Room, Burns Librray, Boston CollegeArtist Sam Fields invites the Boston College community to participate in a collaborative textile workshop exploring making as an act of care, connection, and shared creativity. Participants will learn accessible crochet techniques to create floral forms for It Was Good, Fields’ large-scale textile garden installation. No prior experience is necessary.

Rather than each participant creating a finished piece, forms may pass from hand to hand, with multiple people contributing to their growth across workshops. Fields will bring these forms back to their studio and incorporate them into the final installation, where each participant will be credited as a contributor to the project. Through this process, the workshop considers how making together can become a practice of accompaniment, where individual contributions become part of something larger.

1:30 Public Talk: Artist Sam Fields  on "Textiles, Embodiment, and Empathy"

Artist and educator Sam Fields will deliver a public talk about their textile-based practice and the ways craft can explore care, interdependence, embodied knowledge, and collective making. Moving between their studio work, public installations, and community-based projects, Fields will consider textiles as materials that carry memory, labor, and histories of both individual and collective experience. In conversation with the textile and weaving works in ART CUT Boston: Exercises in Empathy—Accompaniment, the talk will explore how acts of weaving, stitching, and working with our hands can offer ways of understanding our relationships to one another and the world around us.
