Josh Seim is broadly interested in the sociologies of work, medicine, welfare, punishment, and more. He also frequently writes about pedagogy and ethnographic methods. 

His research has appeared in American Sociological ReviewSocial ProblemsSociological Methods and ResearchSocial Science and MedicinePunishment and SocietyJournal of Contemporary EthnographyTeaching Sociology, and other outlets. 

He is the author of The Welfare Assembly Line: Public Servants in the Suffering City, (University of California Press, 2026) and Bandage, Sort, and Hustle: Ambulance Crews on the Front Lines of Urban Suffering (University of California Press, 2020).
