CONSTRUCTION UPDATES
Schiller Institute for Science and Society
The new 157,000 square-foot science building, home to the Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and Society, is being constructed on the Middle Campus site of the former Cushing Hall. The new building will feature office and laboratory space for researchers, including engineering faculty, and teaching labs. Maker spaces will provide space for hands-on prototyping. The building will also house the Computer Science Department, the Shea Center for Entrepreneurship, a Clean Room facility, and several classrooms.
Construction has continued through the summer, with the Structural Steel “topping off” in July, and the placement of the concrete floors in the building. This fall will see the start of the exterior framing and masonry work. The building is scheduled to be completed in December 2021.
Pete Frates Center at Harrington Athletics Village
The new 31,000 square-foot Pete Frates Center provides for year-round training space for Baseball and Softball. New locker rooms and player lounges will be created for each team. The building includes hitting tunnels with retractable cages, providing for indoor team practice on a turf surface, as well as sports medicine and strength and conditioning. There is also a small function room for game-day use.
Construction restarted in May, and the building exterior is substantially complete. The interior fit-out is on-going through September, and the building is scheduled to be completed in early October 2020.
Lower Campus Flynn Plex Demolition and Site Reclamation
With the opening of the new Margot Connell Recreation Center in July of 2019, the old “Rec Plex” was demolished and removed from the site last summer. The site reclamation work restarted after the winter, and this summer a large lawn area, three outdoor tennis courts, one outdoor basketball court, and reconfigured parking were completed.
Other Summer Projects
In terms of projects completed this summer, these included kitchen/bath upgrades and 16 new beds in Rubenstein Hall D; exterior restoration work at Bapst Library; laboratory renovations in Devlin Hall, and various annual residence hall capital renewals.
