Are Our Democracies Resilient Enough?

In Germany in the twenty-first century, liberal democracy enjoys widespread support. But according to former federal constitutional judge Peter-Michael Huber, growing polarization among the German people may imperil the very rule of law upon which the country’s political order depends. At a time when polarization is on the rise in Western Europe and the wider democratic world, the implications of Professor Huber’s analysis are significant.

Peter-Michael Huber
Peter-Michael Huber has held the Chair of Public Law and State Philosophy at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich since 2002. Previously, he taught at the universities of Münster, Augsburg, Jena and Erlangen-Nuremberg. From 2010 to 2023, Huber was a judge at the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe. In 2009 and 2010 he worked as Thuringian Minister of the Interior.
