Ted Merritt is an Adjunct Professor co-teaching a new course exploring the jurisprudence and practical execution of federal criminal civil rights laws. Merritt has been teaching this curriculum at Boston University Law School since 2015.
In a 41-year career with the U.S. Department of Justice, Merritt specialized in the enforcement of civil rights laws, first serving in the Employment Litigation Section and then the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division in Washington, D.C., where he prosecuted federally the first anti-Asian hate crime (Vincent Chin case). Transferring to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston in 1985, Merritt continued to prosecute and supervise criminal civil rights cases involving police abuse and other violations of constitutional rights, hate crimes and human trafficking. He also prosecuted public corruption cases, including the 2011 prosecution of the Massachusetts Speaker of the House.
Merritt graduated with a B.A. degree from Harvard College in 1974 and received his J.D. degree from Villanova University School of Law in 1977.
