BC Law Policies

BC Law's Standards of Academic Integrity in the Student Policies & Procedures Handbook contains three provisions relevant to generative AI: Cheating, Plagiarism, and Section IV (Unauthorized Use of Generative AI Tools). Section IV explicitly prohibits "the use of large language models such as ChatGPT when preparing to write or writing academic work submitted for credit (including but not limited to term papers, response papers, and exam answers) . . . unless expressly permitted by the course instructor."

Your course instructor may add their own explicit permissions or restrictions on the use of generative AI; always check the course syllabus and any written assignment directions, and ask your professor if you have any questions.

Staff writers may not use AI to replace their own work on any BCLR assignment. Limited use of AI as a support tool, such as for brainstorming, organization, grammar, or clarity, is permitted only if the staff writer independently verifies all information, makes all final editorial judgments, and remains fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the final product.

Any use of AI that materially assists in the drafting, editing, or revision of an assignment must be disclosed to the staff writer’s Senior Editor and, if necessary, to the relevant Executive Comment Editor or Executive Note Editor. The disclosure should briefly explain how AI was used and the extent to which it affected the submitted work.
