Our faculty and students are working locally to oppose placement of a large, natural gas compressor station in a densely populated, low-income, environmental justice community in North Weymouth, Massachusetts.
We educate health professionals, parents and the public.

North Weymouth Compressor Station
Enbridge Energy Partners, Inc. has proposed the construction of a natural gas compressor station in a densely populated, low-income coastal community in North Weymouth, MA.
This is a most dangerous proposal. Fires and explosions occur every year in gas pipelines and compressor stations across the United States, and an explosion in the North Weymouth compressor would likely take the lives of school children, elderly persons in nursing homes, and commuters on the nearby Fore River Bridge. Compressor stations also release toxic and carcinogenic chemicals such as benzene, formaldehyde and 1,3-butadiene into the surrounding environment. Exposures to these hazardous chemicals will add to the already disproportionately heavy burden of disease and death in the communities surrounding this facility.
Citing this as a blatant example of environmental injustice, Boston College Global Public Health faculty have joined efforts of area residents, leading scientists, and medical organizations to oppose this project.

Five National Academies' Statement on Air Pollution and Health
On June 29, 2019, scientists from the Boston College Program for Global Public Health and the Common Good were among leaders from the National Academies of Science and Medicine of Brazil, Germany, South Africa, and the United States who came together at United Nations headquarters in New York City to release an international science-policy statement on options and measures to reduce health risks associated with air pollution
This statement was part of an initiative on “Air Pollution and Health” relating to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It was developed by the Academy of Science of South Africa, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the US National Academy of Medicine and the US National Academy of Sciences.
Global Observatory on Pollution and Health Director, Dr. Philip Landrigan, led the delegation from the U.S. National Academies of Sciences and Medicine. Dr. Landrigan addressed the health consequences of air pollution.
