The article, entitled "Stress variations in space and time within the mantle section of an oceanic transform zone: Evidence for the seismic cycle" by Chatzaras et al., documents microstructures in a rare mantle exposure of an ancient oceanic transform fault - the Bogota Peninsula shear zone in New Caledonia (southwest Pacific Ocean). Using a combination of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), paleostress determinations, and the quantification of deformation temperatures, this study elucidates spatial and temporal changes in stress within the shear zone that are interpreted as the result of earthquake-related deformation in the upper mantle section of the paleo-transform fault.
