Jerome Lyle Rappaport Distinguished Visiting Professors in Law and Public Policy

The Jerome Lyle Rappaport Distinguished Visiting Professors in Law and Public Policy are a diverse group of public sector luminaries who spend a semester at Boston College Law School teaching a seminar on public policy, delivering a community address, and meeting with students, faculty, and members of the BC and Rappaport Center communities.  Appointed for the breadth of their public sector experience, the Visiting Professors have included:

  • Martin O'Malley, former Governor of Maryland, Mayor of Baltimore, and U.S. presidential candidate
  • Carmen Ortiz, first Latina woman appointed U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts
  • Hon. Geraldine S. Hines, first African-American woman to serve on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court
  • Robert J. Cordy, former Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court
  • Dannel P. Malloy, former Governor of Connecticut and Chancellor of the University of Maine system
  • Jane Swift, former Governor of Massachusetts and President and Executive Director of LearnLaunch, Inc.
  • Richard Cordray, first Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and Chief Operating Officer of Federal Student Aid at the U.S. Department of Education

Senior Fellows in Residence

Senior Fellows in Residence at the Rappaport Center for Law and Public Policy are mid-career professionals in various disciplines who are deeply engaged at the highest level of research and practice regarding current issues of law and public policy. They may come from government, the judiciary, academia, or the nonprofit sector.

The Senior Fellows will be in residence for three days at Boston College Law School. During their residency, Senior Fellows will teach in the law and public policy seminar, deliver a public lecture, and engage with the BC and Rappaport communities.

2021 Senior Fellows in Residence [APPLICATION CLOSED]

The Rappaport Center for Law and Public Policy at Boston College Law School convenes thought leaders, legislators, academics, and practitioners to engage in spirited, robust conversations on significant public policy issues. Our programs aim to cultivate a deeper understanding of the integration of law and public policy to effect change. The Center also runs a summer Fellowship program for law students throughout Massachusetts who are passionate about public policy and public service.

The Rappaport Center invites applications for Senior Fellows in Residence from mid-career professionals in various disciplines who are deeply engaged in research and/or practice regarding current issues of law and public policy. Senior Fellows may come from government, the judiciary, academia, political activism, or the nonprofit sector. The program enables the Rappaport Center to bring dynamic professionals to Boston College Law School to share their expertise with students, faculty, and staff and to foster valuable intellectual partnerships with the campus community. Past Fellows included Lance Freeman, Brittny Saunders, and Zephyr Teachout. 

Senior Fellows will join us for an intensive three-day residency that will include, among other activities: co-teaching a two-hour seminar with Faculty Director Daniel Kanstroom, delivering a community address, conducting one or two workshops, meeting with students, guest lecturing, and participating in lunches, dinners, and other activities.

Selection Criteria: 

  • The ideal candidate is a highly accomplished academic or professional who works in the arenas of law and public policy, with a primary focus on state and local government.
  • Has a professional degree (e.g., JD, MD, PhD)  or has achieved an equivalent level of professional reputation.
  • Interested in participating in interdisciplinary conversations.
  • Able to fully commit to our program for three days without conflicting commitments.
  • We will strongly consider applications from diverse scholars and professionals.  Diversity, defined expansively, encompasses race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, national origin, class, and all the fascinating characteristics that make us different.

Duration and Location: The residency will be for three consecutive days in Spring 2021 (mid-January to mid-April) determined by mutual agreement between the Rappaport Center and the selected Senior Fellow.

Funding: The fellowship will provide a stipend of $6,500, as well as costs associated with travel and accommodations. 

Deadline: On a rolling basis until September 1, 2020.

  3. Upload a curriculum vitae
  4. Upload a proposal for a topic to cover in the two-hour seminar
  5. Provide the draft title and subject of your community address
  6. Provide names and contact information for two references (no letters are needed at this stage)
