A new article in the BC News delves into exciting new research co-authored by EESC Assoc. Prof. Alan Kafka and a team of more than 70 international colleagues, published in the journal Science, which investigates the global effects of the pandemic lockdowns – a period of time that has been coined the “anthropause” - on the solid Earth. According to the study, “Measures to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread changes in human activity, leading to a months-long reduction in seismic noise of up to 50%. The 2020 seismic noise quiet period is the longest and most prominent global anthropogenic seismic noise reduction on record”.
