Living Learning Communities
Living Learning Communities (LLCs) give students a chance to live intentionally alongside peers who share their interests and values—like sustainability and healthy living.
It is our hope that students find their residential living arrangements to be a positive part of their college experience. In the event that roommate concerns or life changes necessitate a change in residence, the Residential Life office has established protocols to help students plan for a smooth transition.

First-year students live in traditional style rooms on either Newton Campus, Upper Campus, or Brookline Campus (for Messina College students only). Information unrelated to housing is available through the First Year Experience office.
As sophomores, most students participate in the room selection process. Rising sophomores living on the Chestnut Hill campus historically select roommates and live in suite or traditional style rooms based on their randomly assigned "pick time." In addition, for the 2026–27 academic year, rising sophomore students can apply to live in the Healthy Living (HLC) or Fr. Rutilio Grande Intercultural Experience (GIE) communities, or the Sophomore Living Experience (SLE) in Walsh Hall.
Sophomore Messina College students living on the Brookline Campus can select roommates and live in the Messina West buildings.
The majority of Boston College students receive three years of guaranteed housing. Students with three years of housing must live in an off-campus apartment junior year. More information can be found through our campus partners in the Dean of Students office.
In addition, many students choose to study abroad during their junior year. More information about study abroad can be found on our housing assignments page.
Students are not required to live on campus senior year, however more than 90 percent of BC students choose to do so. Seniors are the first to choose housing as part of the room selection process.
Transfer Students
The majority of Boston College students receive three years of guaranteed housing. Sophomore transfer students receive two years of guaranteed housing, during their first and last year on campus. Transfer students admitted in fall of 2024 onward receive two years of guaranteed housing, while those admitted prior receive one year of guaranteed housing.
Exchange Students
New international exchange students should receive information from the Office of Global Education in regards to orientation and arrival.
Resident Assistants are full-time students who live in the residence halls and are responsible for a community of residents. They provide support, act as a resource for students, coordinate social and educational programs, and work together as a staff to enforce University policy within the halls.
