A memorial service was held on June 26 at the University’s Connors Family Retreat and Conference Center in Dover for E. Thomas “Tom” Babbin, a Boston College technology consultant for 14 years who died in a hospice in Needham on May 13 after suffering a cerebral aneurysm on December 28. He was 58.

Mr. Babbin joined the University’s Information Technology department in 1997, working with departments across campus to help them set up FileMaker Pro databases and ensure that they had all the support they needed, said Technology Consultants Manager Sami Karachi.

“He was a quiet man and always remained calm, no matter what the situation was. He always kept things in perspective – that’s important for somebody working in IT,” he said. “Tom had a great, dry sense of humor and was a real ‘customer service person’ – he knew a lot of people on campus and could move things along very well.”

Mr. Babbin also enjoyed music, reading, building ship models, his two dogs, solving computer problems and watching Monty Python routines, said his widow, Sophia Bildes.

“Tom was a kind, loving, gentle, soft-spoken, witty, knowledgeable and exceptionally decent man. He had a wonderfully droll sense of humor that kept me laughing during our 35 years together.”
