The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation has named Mark Soo, a 2014 graduate of the Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences and a 2017 graduate of the Lynch School of Education, as a 2017 Knowles Teaching Fellow.

The prestigious fellowship is given annually to early-career high school mathematics and science teachers who demonstrate strong potential as educators.

Soo will begin teaching biology and environmental science this fall at Westford Academy, a public school in Westford, Mass. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the Morrissey College and an M.Ed. from the Lynch School.

The Knowles Teaching Fellows Program is a comprehensive, five-year program that supports beginning mathematics and science teachers in their efforts to develop teaching expertise and lead from the classroom. Through the program, Knowles Fellows have access to grants for engaging in professional development and spearheading leadership activities that have an impact beyond their own classrooms. Fellows also benefit from access to stipends, mentoring and coaching from experienced teachers and teacher educators, and membership in a nationwide community of more than 300 teachers who are committed to improving education.

“I'm thrilled to be able to join such a committed and talented community of educators,” said Soo. “The program will help me develop as a teacher and provide the best education I can to my students.”

Soo praised the education he received at Boston College for preparing him for a career in teaching.

“The rigorous biology coursework I experienced as an undergraduate and the Lynch School’s focus on empowering teachers to solve educational challenges, prepared me to help all students become scientific thinkers and responsible citizens.  I am looking forward to the experience.”
