The Pine Manor Institute for Student Success at Boston College strives to provide first-generation students with high financial need the opportunity and support necessary to enhance their strengths and talents.

We believe that with resources, mentorship, and encouragement, students will use their gifts, self-confidence, and values to realize their future hopes and build pathways to success.

Through participation in Pine Manor Institute programs, students develop a sense of self, practice self-advocacy, and acquire the resources necessary to pursue their academic and social goals. In tandem, students build a network of community support as they discern post-secondary and post-collegiate pathways.

From middle school through the first professional years, we closely guide, mentor, and encourage program participants’ personal development and realization of their life goals. We are committed to embracing the formation of the whole person as set forth in the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis.

The Academy

Beginning in middle school, Academy students work with Success Coaches and attend a summer enrichment program to cultivate their potential for excellence, both in and out of the classroom.

As Academy students enter high school, they grow their knowledge through their academic choices, interests, care for others, and ability to apply life skills to advance their goals. Academy students are exposed to, and learn about, the many post high school choices available to them including, but not limited to, four-year and two-year colleges, vocational and technical schools, and career pathways.

Mentoring and Academic Achievement

The Institute's Mentoring and Academic Achievement programs support undergraduate matriculation and academic degree attainment through individual and group mentoring and advising, instruction in mindful approaches to challenges, and courses and programming focused on first-gen identity and academic success both as undergraduates and in preparation for graduate study.

Alumni Outreach and Career Education

Alumni Outreach programming assists graduates of The Academy, Mentoring and Academic Achievement, and Messina College, with mentorship and life coaching for early career support.

Messina College

As part of Boston College, Messina College combines the excellence of one of the nation’s best universities with a supportive small-school setting designed to assist first-generation students. Messina College will provide students with post-graduation pathways including the opportunity to continue their studies in a BA/BS program at Boston College, transfer to another educational institution or begin their professional careers.
