Naloxone Hydrochloride (Narcan®): A Decade of Law Enforcement and Nursing Collaboration
<p>1 Contact Hour. Registration fee - $19</p> <p><b>ABOUT THE TALK</b></p> <p>The presentation shall address the proven value of First Responders specifically Law Enforcement Officers carrying and administering Naloxone, after approved training. Attendees will travel in time from 2010 to present day and experience best practices, a direct result of the collaboration of Law Enforcement and Health Care Professionals. The presentation will involve a broad multi dimensional approach of treatment and referrals rather than arrest. The family shall be provided opportunities of group counseling and treatment. This unique approach addresses the challenges a family endures and how the police and health care professionals work together with intersecting disciplines.</p> <p>Focal points include addressing the situation as a disease and public health issue not as a crime and maintaining a real-time database of overdoses through local communities, along with re- entering the individual to the community clean and sober.</p> <p>The four simple pillars of prevention, education, treatment and recovery, (re-entry), will result in success for the community, family and individual. In addition, a detailed overview of the current epidemic of accidental opiate overdoses and steps to reduce associated deaths. Attendees will understand the path traveled by law enforcement and nursing resulting in; Naloxone Policy, Good Samaritan Law, Post Overdose Home Visits, Live Data Base along with the challenges of the COVID era.</p> <p>In addition, safe prescribing, dispensing and disposal of unused pharmaceuticals shall be addressed. The presentation shall conclude with demonstrating how a local issue evolved into a national initiative to streamline access to Naloxone, save lives and the connection of the nursing professional and the police.<br /> </p>

<p>1 Contact Hour. Registration fee - $19</p> <p><b>ABOUT THE PRESENTER</b></p> <p>Heidi Ginter, MD is Board Certified in Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine and has spent nearly two decades treating patients with substance use disorders. She currently works for Recovery Centers of America (RCA) as the Chief Medical Officer in Massachusetts.</p> <p>Dr. Ginter earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and a doctorate at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She completed her family medicine residency at the University of Massachusetts, Worcester and began her career working in a community health center where she provided care and advocacy for individuals from marginalized communities. Through that work, she found a passion for treating pregnant people struggling with addiction and developed expertise in the use of medications for addiction treatment (MAT). </p> <p>She is a prominent advocate for MAT, especially opioid agonist therapies, like methadone and buprenorphine, for opioid use disorder, and lectures extensively on the topic, including on SiriusXM’s Doctor Radio show where she discussed fentanyl and the opioid overdose crisis. </p> <p>She lives in the MetroWest Boston where she enjoys running, cycling, co parenting her two younger daughters, and making visits to her older daughter and two step-sons at their respective colleges.</p>
<p><b>Wednesday, November 30th, 12-1 pm&nbsp;</b></p> <p>Gain insight about two common stimulant use disorders: cocaine use disorder and methamphetamine use disorder. Changing patterns of stimulant use will be presented along with specific information about how each of these drugs affects the people using them. Behavioral treatment with contingency management will be described in detail with recommendations for medication management of withdrawal. There will also be discussion of studies investigating off-label medication use for cravings. Issues of equity and harm reduction will be presented as integral aspects of stimulant use disorder recovery support.</p>

<p><b>Wednesday, November 2nd, 12-1 pm&nbsp;</b></p> <p>Join this webinar to acquire a foundation for understanding and treating substance use disorders (SUDs).&nbsp; Substance use disorders, aka addictions, are currently understood to be chronic diseases with features similar to other chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes.&nbsp;The neurobiology of SUDs will be described including the impact of genetics, trauma, and drug use, including alcohol.&nbsp; An overview of the biological basis for behavior changes observed in individuals suffering with active SUDs will be explored along with a model of treatment based on respect, harm reduction, and the latest evidence to support recovery.<br> </p>
