The Boston College Forum on Racial Justice in America will partner with Student Affairs to host Solidarity for Racial Justice, a campus-wide event that will invite students, faculty, staff, and student organizations to walk on Main Campus in a show of solidarity in support of racial justice.

The event will take place on Tuesday, October 27, from 12 noon–4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m8:00 p.m. on the plaza at O'Neill Library, and will feature Solidarity Walks beginning at 12:00 noon, 3:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. In order to comply with Massachusetts public health regulations, pre-registration is required to participate in the walk. The event will also feature information tables, conversation circles, and a display board for participants to post individual messages committing to action steps to eliminate racism.

The event is sponsored by and will feature representatives from the University’s eight schools and colleges, various administrative units, and eight leading student groups: The Asian Caucus, Student-Athlete Advisory Council, Black Student Forum, FACES Council, Graduate Student Association, Law School Student Association, Organization of Latin American Affairs, and UGBC.

[W]e are hoping that this event will provide an engaging and meaningful way for people to come together in a safe and physically distant way to demonstrate commitment to work for racial justice and to promote the common good.
Associate Vice President for Student Engagement and Formation Tom Mogan

“This event represents an opportunity for Student Affairs to bring students and prominent student organizations together with faculty and staff from all eight of BC’s schools and colleges in a show of solidarity against racism and in support of racial justice,” said Associate Vice President for Student Engagement and Formation Tom Mogan.

Mogan said the initial idea for the event came out of a discussion among several of the University’s senior-level administrators and academic administrators as part of a seminar on Jesuit education and student formation, but it has been shaped by a series of meetings with the sponsoring student organizations who have provided invaluable feedback and enthusiasm.

“As a part of the Forum for Racial Justice in America, this event is designed to provide an opportunity for the campus community to physically participate in demonstrating support for the Forum’s goals,” said Mogan. “We are hoping that the event will provide an engaging and meaningful way for people to come together in a safe and physically distant way to demonstrate commitment to work for racial justice and promote the common good.”

In order to accommodate those who may be studying, teaching, or working remotely, the event will also have an online component. Members of the Boston College community can log in to watch the proceedings, and register for an online small group discussion led by students, faculty, and staff.
