Democracy, Governance & Education
In countries around the world, trust in institutions is decreasing as democratic norms and institutions absorb attacks from populist and authoritarian movements. How can democratic education rebuild social trust, and how is that best undertaken in the context of Catholic higher education?
The Working Group on Democracy, Governance, and Education met 12 times during the pilot program 2023-2025, inspiring members to develop multiple collaborative and independent projects ranging from a graduate seminar on AI Ethics, Human Rights, and the Future of Democracy; to reflections on racial justice initiatives in the US; to research on digital democracy and youth movements in Kenya; culminating in several articles and dialogues published in the Clough Center Journal 2025 and participation in international conferences on democracy in Venice and Bogota.

The working group on Democracy, Governance, and Education, chaired by Jonathan Laurence, met 12 times during the pilot program 2023-2025. BC participants meet in person; international members connect virtually from Bogota, Dublin, Lisbon, and Nairobi.

The working group on Democracy, Governance, and Education brings together experts in politics, education, history, law, ethics, journalism, and communication to think seriously about the threats we face and the prospects for recovery through education strategies.
By breaking down silos between political science, education, and peace studies, this Working Group represents a significant step toward providing a big picture view of the issues surrounding the decrease in social trust, the rise in populism and nationalism, and the role of civic education in the formation of new citizens.
Over the course of two years, the group has shared insights and resources about the state of affairs around the world and has collaborated on a vision for the path forward in our efforts as teachers, scholars, and engaged citizens.

The Association of Jesuit Colleges & Universities (AJCU) is a national organization that represents Jesuit higher education which, among other things, encourages and facilitates collaborative initiatives among its member institutions, such as convening a commision on "the forces that threaten our commitment to the discovery of truth, the increasing polarization that threatens civil discourse and communal discernment for the common good, and how these might be addressed in the educational programs for our students," leading to the creation of the above report. - Erik Owens, "What Role Should Universities Play in Fostering Healthy Democratic Cultures?" in Clough Center Journal 2025
