All graduates should be in the assembly areas by 8:15 a.m.

Guests should be seated by 9:05 a.m. when the academic procession is scheduled to begin.

Procession

The academic procession enters from both the south (Merkert Chemistry Center) and west (Conte Forum) sides of Alumni Stadium. 

Morrissey College of Arts and Science 
Students process in front of the west (Conte Forum) stands on the Merkert Chemistry Center end and down the center aisle to their assigned seats.

For the Morrissey College, the procession is best viewed from Alumni Stadium sections D, DD, E, EE, F, and FF.

Carroll School of Management, Carroll School of Management—Graduate Programs, Woods College of Advancing Studies, Woods College of Advancing Studies—Graduate Programs 
Students process in front of the west (Conte Forum) stands on the Flynn Recreation Complex end and down the center aisle to their assigned seats.

For these schools the procession is best viewed from Alumni Stadium sections B, BB, C, CC, D, and D.  

Boston College Law School, Boston College of Social Work, Connell School of Nursing, Connell School of Nursing—Graduate Programs, Graduate School of the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences, Lynch School of Education, Lynch School of Education—Graduate Programs, and School of Theology and Ministry

For these schools the procession is best viewed from Alumni Stadium sections G, H, and J. 

 

The President and dignitaries process in front of the west stands and down the center aisle. The ceremony begins when all members of the President's party have reached the stage.

Academic Honors

Academic honors printed in the Commencement program are based on averages at the end of the final semester. Summa cum laude is awarded to the top 4.5 percent of the graduating class, magna cum laude to the next 9.5 percent, and cum laude to the next 15 percent. Academic honors are not calculated for graduate students.

Students in the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences will be notified by the end of April and students in the Carroll School of Management and the Lynch School of Education will be notified in early May if they will be receiving a special award at the Sunday ceremonies. Phi Beta Kappa inductees will also be notified at this time. The other Schools present special awards at the diploma ceremonies on Commencement Day.

 

Diploma Ceremonies

After the President and dignitaries have recessed from Alumni Stadium at the conclusion of the University Commencement, graduates and their guests will go to the assigned locations for the Individual School/College Diploma Ceremonies at which diplomas are awarded. No tickets are needed for the Diploma Ceremonies unless they are moved to the severe weather location. Severe Weather is considered lightning, thunder, high winds, heavy, continuous rain.

Individual School/College Diploma Ceremonies will begin as soon as possible after the completion of the University Commencement ceremony. 

Severe Weather Plan

Severe Weather Plan for the University Commencement and Individual School/College Diploma Ceremonies

No tickets are required for the Main Ceremony, which takes place rain or shine in Alumni Stadium. Diploma ceremonies will also take place in their planned locations in light rain and are only moved in the event of severe weather conditions. If the diploma ceremonies are moved to their severe weather locations, tickets are required for some schools. Severe weather is considered lightning, thunder, high winds, heavy, continuous rain. 

Severe weather ticket distribution for Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences (undergrad) and Connell School of Nursing (undergrad and grad) will take place at cap and gown distribution. Severe weather ticket distribution for Carroll School of Management (undergrad) will take place in Fulton 315 during cap and gown distribution hours. Carroll School of Management undergraduate students must complete the senior survey prior to picking up severe weather tickets: https://bba-carroll-bc.12twenty.com/Login.

Diploma Ceremonies severe weather site announcements will appear on the Boston College Commencement website (www.bc.edu/commencement), or you may call the Boston College Info line (617-552-INFO).

UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT (MAIN CEREMONY)

Commencement will be held outdoors in Alumni Stadium rain or shine.

Beginning at 10:00 a.m., on the internet via D2 Productions (live broadcast). To view the live webcast of Commencement, please access the following link to the Commencement home page at www.bc.edu/commencement.

Alternate seating and viewing sites will be available via closed-circuit TV as follows:

  • Cadigan Alumni Center—Atrium
  • Conte Forum
  • Devlin Hall—Room 008
  • Robsham Theater
  • Stokes Hall—Room 195S

In the event of severe weather, these additional sites will also be available:

If you decide to use an alternate viewing location, please choose the site that is either your Diploma Ceremony location or the site closest to it.

Individual School/College Diploma Ceremonies will begin immediately after the completion of the University Commencement. Severe Weather site locations are listed below.

Dear Graduating Students and Parents:

The Boston College Police Department has issued the following guidelines to enhance security and to facilitate the quick entrance of all guests for our Commencement Exercises.

Luggage, backpacks, briefcases, large bags, and wrapped gifts will not be allowed into or stored at Alumni Stadium or at the respective school graduation sites. We suggest that you leave these items in your car or the student’s room. Normal-sized handbags, purses, clear bags and camera bags will be allowed but will be subject to inspection prior to entry. Those without bags may enter Alumni Stadium in separate lines.    

These policies are consistent with security plans at colleges and universities throughout the region and are meant solely to expedite entry into our venues and provide security and comfort for those who will be in attendance. Additional security personnel will also be on hand as a precaution.

Cap & Gown Return

Drop Off Locations for Cap and Gown Return

The rental outfit must be returned no later than 5:00 p.m. on Commencement Day. There will be a charge of $35.00 for caps and gowns returned incomplete or without the appropriate receipt.

Representatives of University Cap and Gown will be collecting rented academic regalia at the main entrances of the following locations:

  • McElroy Commons-Beacon Street Entrance
  • The Hillside Shop in Maloney Hall
  • Cadigan Alumni Center on the Brighton Campus

Returns after 5:00 p.m. must be made at the bookstore in McElroy Commons.

Residence Hall Closings

 

Residence halls close at 8:00 p.m. on Commencement Day. Make sure you are packed and ready to go. Drop off your key if you have not done so. Visit bc.edu/closing for more information.
