Current Offerings

Adolescent Readers

Secondary school teachers are content specialists. It is our job to ensure that students leave our classrooms with the content knowledge necessary to succeed in our disciplines. Any reading or literacy skills at the secondary level are expected to be taught in the English classroom. While many of the reading and literacy skills acquired in the English classroom can be used across disciplines, it is still important that students are provided content-specific reading strategies. First, we will discuss what skills are involved in reading. Next, we will use Functional Language Analysis to examine how discipline-specific texts are organized. A deeper understanding of how text is constructed can help teachers model how to read the content-specific text.

Adolescent Readers: Supporting Readers in Content Areas

The purpose of this two-day course is to introduce secondary teachers to the necessary skills to help their students read well in their discipline.

TCS

Teaching, Curriculum, and Society

Creating 21st Century Learning Environments

This course is designed to get participants to think about learning environments holistically and explore the influences on how learning environments are developed. The discussions are meant to probe how a learning environment often reflects values, priorities, and conceptions about learning and teaching. By unpacking these ideals and projecting 21st-century needs, participants will be able to create more intentional learning environments that align with the tone of the class, the physical space, and digital experiences. Accountability is essential to positive outcomes, therefore this course culminates with participants creating a concrete plan for the ongoing monitoring of their learning environments.

Immigration Crisis

The current immigration crisis is having a direct impact on immigrant-origin children and youth in unprecedented ways. These heightened and significant challenges have raised questions about the role educators should play within the context of hostile immigrant policies and diverse local responses. Given the importance of schooling to the immigrant experience of achieving social integration and seeking educational opportunities, we aim to explore together how the work of educators can mediate the challenges facing schools and communities. In this three-day workshop, participants will learn evidence-informed practices for responding to youth in crisis and engage in design processes to support implementing these practices in their contexts. Participants will identify opportunities to address barriers to responding to the immigration crisis.
